Associate Lawyer Opportunity

Walker Law Professional Corporation is a boutique commercial litigation law firm located in downtown Toronto. We offer a competitive compensation package with benefits and perks. We also offer performance based tuition assistance and a bonus for suitable candidates. We are seeking an ambitious, personable and entrepreneurial litigation lawyer to join our firm.

Key Requirements:

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Providing high quality legal service to all Walker Law clients;
  • Arguing motions/applications;
  • Conducting trials, mediations and conducting examinations for discovery/cross examinations;
  • Ensuring that clients are updated and aligned with legal strategy;
  • Developing and maintain excellent client relationship skills, gaining clients’ confidence and that of other professionals;
  • Receiving requests for legal advice from current and potential clients and deciding on the most appropriate responses to make to these requests;
  • Establishing and executing strategy as instructed by the client;
  • Offering advice on the law, legal procedures and a wide range of associated issues;
  • Ensuring that docket entries are recorded or assigned to client files as per practice standards;
  • Ensuring that professional conduct complies to Walker Law values and customer service principles;
  • Drafting motion/application records, affidavits, factum, mediation and pre-trial conference memorandums;
  • Research and case history to ensure accuracy of advice and procedures;
  • Represent clients in tribunals and in Courts where required;
  • Mentoring and coaching students, if necessary.

Required Experience/Skills/Qualifications:

  • Legally entitled to practice law in Canada and member in good standing with LSUC;
  • Two (2) to five (5) or more years of litigation experience in commercial litigation;
  • Ability to identify the most effective file strategy and manage multiple complex client files with minimal supervision;
  • Ability to comprehend complex matters and identify the laws that are applicable to them;
  • Ability to use initiative and exercise judgment in identifying issues needing immediate attention;
  • Must possess a thorough knowledge of the legal procedures and committed to keeping updated with the current developments;
  • Proficient in use of legal and productivity technology and must be able to maintain, update and modify documents needed for court presentations
  • A desire to participate in business development opportunities through attending and/or joining appropriate networking events and memberships;
  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy, ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines and draft correspondence and legal documents;
  • Strong administrative, organizational, interpersonal and communication skills (oral and written), solid typing skills;
  • The ability to research on Quicklaw/Westlaw is required;
  • Flexibility with respect to working occasional overtime on an as-needed basis.

Litigation Assistant/Clerk Opportunity

Walker Law Professional Corporation is a boutique commercial litigation law firm located in downtown Toronto. We are seeking a Litigation Assistant/Clerk with a minimum of 4 years of experience in commercial litigation. The successful candidate must be an enthusiastic self starter who is a strong team player, problem solver, proactive and takes initiative. A flexible attitude as well as keen attention to detail including thorough proofreading skills is essential. The ideal candidate must be able to interact with colleagues and clients in a collegial, professional and collaborative manner. We offer competitive compensation based on experience and benefits are included.

Key Requirements:

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Preparing/drafting and/or revising drafts of correspondence, various court documents, including pleadings, motions and affidavits of service documents
  • Scheduling mediations, pre-trials and trial dates, amongst other scheduling tasks
  • Awareness of processes and deadlines for serving and filing court documents
  • Organizing and maintaining physical and electronic filing systems
  • Support for dockets and accounts
  • Other administrative duties as required, such as maintaining legal professionals’ calendars, contacts and travel arrangements
  • Assisting litigators with organization and administration

Required Experience/Skills/Qualifications:

  • Successful completion of a post-secondary program in a related discipline (i.e., legal assistant, law clerk and/or Paralegal course) and a minimum of 4 years experience in a Litigation Setting gained ideally within a commercial or corporate litigation practice
  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy, ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines and draft correspondence and legal documents
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and work autonomously
  • Knowledge or familiarity with the Rules of Civil Procedure
  • Ability to use initiative and exercise judgment in identifying issues needing immediate attention
  • Strong administrative, organizational, interpersonal and communication skills (oral and written), solid typing skills (75-80 wpm)
  • Intermediate to advanced technical skills (including Microsoft Office, PC Law)
  • The ability to research on Quicklaw/Westlaw is an asset, but is not required
  • The ability to adapt to firm policies and procedures
  • Flexibility with respect to working occasional overtime on an as-needed basis

Paralegal Opportunity

The successful candidate must be an enthusiastic self starter who is a strong team player, problem solver, proactive and takes initiative. A flexible attitude as well as keen attention to detail including thorough proofreading skills is essential. The ideal candidate must be able to interact with colleagues and clients in a collegial, professional and collaborative manner. We offer competitive compensation based on experience and benefits.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Providing legal support to lawyers in a busy commercial litigation practice
  • Researching, drafting, reviewing and revising legal documents
  • Proficient with legal research tools such as QuickLaw and Westlaw
  • Client intake, communication and customer service
  • Assist the firm with closing documents and checklists
  • Drafting pleadings, motions, factum and appellate documents
  • Working with process servers to assure that they are filed in the court
  • Performing administrative duties (calendar hearings and deadlines, organize case files, billing, manage logistics etc)

Required Experience/Skills/Qualifications:

  • Successful completion of a post-secondary program (Paralegal diploman or degree) and a minimum of three years experience in a Litigation Setting gained ideally within a commercial or corporate litigation practice
  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy, ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines
  • Must be highly organized, able to work automously and effectively manage multiple matters and competing priorities in a dynamic environment
  • Ability to use initiative and exercise judgment in identifying issues needing immediate attention

Articling

Walker Law is a dynamic boutique law firm committed to training students to become exceptional lawyers. You will have an opportunity to work on complex files, gain hands-on experience, interact with clients, receive coaching and supervision. Walker Law typically hires one articling student per year.
